The uniqueness of Fanette Mellier’s book Panorama provides fertile ground for adaptation into an “animated film.” The unchanging nature of the drawing across the pages, which allows one to intensely experience the passage of time through color shifts, requires rethinking the conventional codes of animation, which are more closely tied to the movement of forms than to color itself. The very notion of a timeline takes on a new meaning here, as the color transitions form the core of the graphic narrative.
The exhibition places the animated film in dialogue with the book that inspired it. Displayed as panels, 24 books reconstruct the work’s circadian cycle and create a world in which layers of ink draw a subtle and vertiginous horizon.
Exhibition from September 27 to October 6, 2023 at Le Shadok in Strasbourg as part of the Format(s) Festival.
